feline adventures
My kitty was having some pain and peeing blood, so I figured she had a UTI (which she gets pretty often, although she hasn't had one for a few years now). So I take her in to the vet -- keep in mind this is a 10 year old, severely obese cat with some nasty looking (but overall harmless) dermatitis -- she's also mildly retarded, I think -- despite all this she's happy and playful and certainly eats well (that would be an understatement). So anyway, we go into the vet, me thinking she's going to get her temperature taken and some antibiotics -- next thing I know vet's telling me kidney stones, diabetes, needs to stay overnight and have x-rays and blood work.... I was terrified! I read up on feline diabetes, and you have to put your cat on a restricted diet and give them shots every day, and I don't know if I could actually give her shots. I've tried restricted diets already for her obesity, but the deal is that there are 4 cats in the house and she just eats everybody else's food if she doesn't get enough, so that's a no go. kidney stones would mean surgery that I can ill afford. Anyhow, the vet just called and all the results are back and she has a kidney infection. That's not exactly good news, because I'm sure it's very painful, but it's a hell of a lot better than the other options! The other good thing is that her dumb-ness makes her easy to give medicine to -- most cats, after you give them one dose, start getting suspicious of you. Ursula forgets from day to day and greets you with "Hi! What's that in your hand...oh." and you can usually get the medicine down her throat before she figures out what's going on.
